The Travel Nurse Mani-Pedi: How to Keep Salon-Quality Nails Without the Appointments

When Your Schedule Doesn’t Care About Your Self-Care

We all know everyone’s go-to line when you say you’re a nurse. The disbelieving “So you only work three days a week?!”. But as those of us putting in those hospital hours understand, it is so much more than that. The physical, mental and emotional toll this job takes can make it hard to set aside time for yourself. Everyone preaches the benefits of self care, but no one is giving you a solution on how to care for yourself.

This issue really hit home to me when, as silly as it sounds, my manicures were affected. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a nail girl. I don’t feel like myself unless I’ve got a fresh set. But while working 12 week contracts, it feels impossible to find a good salon that fits your schedule. I’ve slept through appointments, wasted money on sets I hated, and left feeling disappointed too many times to count.

It seemed the only solution was to take over the process myself. I can pack up all my supplies and easily cart them from rental to rental. This has me ready at a moment’s notice to redo or repair my nails as needed.

Here, I’m sharing my routine and essential products. Hopefully this guide can help you to achieve your dream salon-quality nails that can withstand your workload and fit your life.

The Essential Foundation (Prep & Longevity)

This section focuses on preparation, which is the key to longevity, especially since you are using at-home gel or dip systems.

Prep will be your best friend, so get familiar. Without proper preparation and application, you can kiss your nails goodbye before your shift is over.

Starting with clean, dry nails, push cuticles back. It’s personal preference whether you remove them fully – be careful with the clippers if you’re a novice. Another option is an instant cuticle remover.

Shape nails – I use a 180/100 grit file. If I apply tips, I get my natural nails as short as possible. Make sure to buff the nail plate as well.

To really obtain the salon look, I use the GelX method. My favorite tips are made by Apres, but for primer/dehydrator/glue I prefer Beetles brand.

If you’re interested I can write a more in-depth tutorial about the GelX technique.

(Just let us know in the comment section! It would have to be a whole video)

Beetles brand has provided me with the easiest application and best longevity. I can keep my nails on for 3-4 weeks, even while washing my hands hundreds of times per night and changing gloves constantly.

You’ll need a UV lamp throughout, I’ve linked one of my favorites below. If you’re doing GelX, a smaller lamp for spot-curing can make the job easier.

Color and Application (The Core Products)

Just like before, my go-to for gel polish is the Beetles brand. I’ve collected too many to count by now. I find that the consistency of the polish allows for a smooth application. I’ve never experienced chipping or lifting of gel. It lasts me until I have the time for a new manicure, whether that’s one week or four.

This base coat does a great job of retention, and the top coat gives everything that coveted glossy shine – no acetone necessary.

Nail extensions aren’t necessary – you can paint right on your nail as desired!

Having these products can help you obtain a beautiful manicure within 1-2 hours without ever needing to leave your living room.

Personally, I spend some more time than this on my own manicures. I view it as self-care time, just for me. It’s a great time to binge a show or audiobook.

Repair and Health (The Nail Nurse’s Secret)

Proper nail maintenance is especially important. Constant hand sanitizer use coupled with frequent glove changes can have your nails breaking down without care.

Here is the 180/100 grit nail file mentioned above, along with a buffer I use on the nail surface. You can also use cuticle bits on an electric drill for a more precise look (this may take some practice).

When shaping, always be sure to file in the same direction. Filing back and forth can weaken the integrity of your nails.

To really seal your look and improve nail health, be sure to add a cuticle oil. This is my last step to complete my manicure. My favorite oil is this roll-on from Essie.

I’ve gathered a LOT of supplies throughout my nail journey. Moving from place to place every few months, I needed to find a way to bring them all along. The bag below has proven essential in protecting my supplies from leaks or cracks. It allows me to organize my colors, brushes, and prep with ease.

Freedom and Savings

Learning to do my nails at home has provided me with consistent manicures at a bargain price. I can get bored of my nails easily, and the option to switch things up whenever I choose is fun and freeing. While the supplies can seem to be a lot at first, in the long run it pales in comparison to the $100+ I spent every two to three weeks at the salon.

Taking control of my nails is just one more way I maintain control and normalcy in a job that constantly requires me to move. I hope these products help you feel polished and professional on your next assignment.
