Escaping the Cold Why We Chose Warmth and Never Looked Back
By the end of 2025 my life looked nothing like it did just a year earlier.
I grew up in New York. At one point I was living in Boston. If you have ever spent winters in either place you know exactly what that means. Cold mornings that hit you before your feet even touch the floor. Sidewalks that feel more like obstacle courses. Layers on layers of clothing just to step outside. And that quiet tension you carry all winter long because the weather alone drains your energy before the day even begins.
If you know you know.
My name is Karl and my fiancé and I travel full time. She is a travel nurse and I work remotely as a digital nomad. Together that gives us something most people do not have the ability to choose where we wake up not just when we take a vacation.
This winter we made a decision that honestly changed everything.
We headed south.
Not for a week
Not for a holiday
But to live

Why Escaping the Cold Feels Different Than Traveling
There is a big difference between planning a trip and redesigning your life around warmth.
Escaping the cold is not about checking landmarks off a list or rushing from attraction to attraction. It is about how your body feels when you wake up. How your mind feels when you step outside. How much easier it becomes to move through the day when the environment is not working against you.
For me it meant waking up without shivering.
It meant not bracing myself just to walk outside.
It meant being able to walk train work and live without constantly fighting the weather.
North Carolina became our turning point. It still gets cool but it does not punish you. The cold does not linger in your bones or dictate your mood. For the first time in years winter felt manageable.
And honestly once I felt that shift I started to question everything I thought winter had to be.
That experience inspired this list.
