🏖️Our Annual Escape to the Deck
Shelter Island Heights has become more than just a getaway for us; it feels like a second home. Every summer, my fiancée and I, along with a close friend, make our way there whenever we get the chance. A friend’s family owns one of the beautiful houses on the island, and when it is not being rented out, we are lucky enough to spend a few days or even a week enjoying everything it offers.

It is the perfect kind of escape, peaceful, quiet, and full of simple pleasures. Most of our time is spent on the deck, surrounded by nature and the calm view of the open lake. Some mornings, we start our day with coffee outside as the sun rises over the water. Other days, we enjoy breakfast by the pool, taking in the soft sounds of the island waking up.
Shelter Island Heights has a way of slowing time down. The sunsets are breathtaking, the kayak rides are peaceful, and every conversation feels meaningful. We talk about life, our goals, and where we want to go next while staying fully present in the moment.

This place has given us some of our favorite memories, early morning coffees, laughter by the water, and quiet nights under the stars. It is one of those rare places that feels timeless, a spot I will always keep close to my heart and continue returning to year after year.
And to me, that is what traveling is really about. Think back to the last time you went on vacation. Do not focus on how much it cost or what went wrong. Instead, look at the photos of your loved ones, your friends, or your kids if you have them. Look at their smiles, the joy, the pure moments of connection. Hold on to that feeling because those are the memories that truly matter.
That is what Shelter Island brings to me, and I hope you can find a place that gives you that same sense of peace, joy, and love.
Bless,
Karl Mergille
